Queen

Emily slept peacefully, her breath rising and falling in the rhythm of the night, when suddenly a sharp light pierced the room. It was so strong she thought it was burning her skin, and yet she felt no pain, only an irresistible pull. “What is happening?” she thought as her eyelids opened and she saw the radiance pouring through the open window. The light surrounded her, drew her in, her body lifted from the bed as if weightless, and with a cry she vanished into the glow that carried her away. The air around her changed, and before she could take a breath she found herself in a place she did not recognize. It was a spacecraft, its walls gleaming with metallic sheen, and before her stood beings whose eyes shone with calm. One of them, tall, with a gentle voice, stepped closer. “My name is Kael,” he said in English, which Emily understood, and his voice was soothing. “According to our research, you are the only one who can be our queen. We offer you a life of luxury, rule over our entire civilization, the boundless obedience and devotion of all. You will live seven hundred years. But you must know that if you agree, there will be no way back. We have only one chance, which cannot be repeated. If you refuse, we will search elsewhere.” Emily felt her heart pounding. “Seven hundred years… rule…” she whispered inwardly. “It’s insane, but it’s an opportunity I will never have again.” She looked into Kael’s eyes, full of expectation. “Yes,” she said at last, her voice trembling but her decision firm. Kael extended his hand, she took it, their palms joined, and in that moment she knew her life had changed forever.

When she opened her eyes again, she was on a foreign planet. She lay in a room that looked strangely familiar. Beyond the windows stretched alien nature, trees with translucent leaves and a sky glowing with colors she had never seen. But inside the room were her bed, her books, photographs, things from home. “They brought everything…” she thought, and inside her wonder mingled with dread. The door opened and Kael entered, holding a syringe. “To become the true queen, you must accept this,” he said calmly. Emily shivered. “A syringe? What will it do?” Kael’s gaze was steady. “It will fulfill what we promised. Without it you cannot be queen.” Emily felt resistance, but she also knew that so far they had kept every promise. “All right,” she whispered. Kael approached, gently injected her arm. Cold liquid spread through her body, and she felt her mind darken. “No…” she wanted to cry out, but her voice was lost. She collapsed back onto the bed, her body surrendering to stupor.

She found herself in an empty space, infinite, without boundaries. Suddenly she felt something growing from her lower back. “What is this?” she screamed inwardly. The pressure intensified, it grew, heavy, immense. The weight forced her down onto all fours. She turned and with horror saw that from her own body had sprouted a massive insect abdomen, fused to her lower back. “This is impossible…” her hands trembled as she touched it, and she felt her own touch. “It’s real… it’s mine…” She tried to run, but could move only on all fours, dragging behind her the enormous insect abdomen conjoined with her body. “I can’t… I can’t get rid of it…” she sobbed, as the space around her shifted. Suddenly she awoke on a pedestal, still bearing the heavy insect abdomen, fused to her body. “It’s still just a dream… it must be a dream…” she whispered, but the weight was real.

She opened her eyes again and was in her bed. Finally awake. “It was a dream,” she thought, but immediately realized that something large and hot prevented her from closing her legs. She quickly threw off the blanket and with horror saw that she truly had the enormous insect abdomen fused to her lower back. “No!” she cried and burst into tears. With effort she slid off the bed on all fours, the insect abdomen dragging behind her, thudding as it dropped from the bed, every movement agony. She reached the door but could not open it. “I can’t…” she sobbed, and with effort returned to the bed, hauling herself back up with the heavy insect abdomen. Kneeling on the bed, she wept. The door opened and Kael entered. “They will come for you soon,” he said softly. “There will be a coronation. You will fulfill your royal duties for the first time.” Emily trembled. “I don’t want this…” she whispered, but Kael remained silent. More aliens arrived, their hands firm yet gentle. They lifted her from the floor, seated her on a throne with footrests like a gynecological chair, and a support for her fused insect abdomen. They placed a crown upon her head. Emily felt her heart tighten. “This is real…” she thought, as they carried her on the throne into a great hall. The hall was full of aliens bowing to her. “Why me… why me…” she cried, her eyes brimming with tears. She was terribly afraid. Everything was so fast, so incomprehensible. The aliens formed a circle around her, still bowing, and suddenly she felt immense pressure inside the insect abdomen fused to her body. “What is happening?” she screamed. The pain was unbearable, instinctively she began to push. She screamed, her body convulsed, until at last from her insect abdomen slipped a huge white egg, the size of a melon. One of the aliens grasped it, helped to draw it out completely, and carried it away. All cheered, proclaiming her glory. Emily perceived it only dimly, her body was terribly exhausted. She did not even notice how they brought her back to her room and laid her on the bed. She closed her eyes, her mind sinking into exhaustion.

Emily awoke again, her body trembling as she realized all that had happened. Her hands shook as she touched the massive insect abdomen fused to her lower back. Every touch she felt as if it were her own skin. “I must get rid of it,” she thought desperately, and tried to remove it, but the pain was unbearable. “It won’t come off… it won’t…” she sobbed, tears streaming down her face. The door opened and Kael entered. Emily turned to him, her voice full of pleading. “Please… take me back… rid me of this… I can’t endure it…” Kael looked at her gravely. “Emily,” he said quietly, “that is no longer possible. The injection you received contained the sperm of all our people on the planet. We can do this only once every three hundred and fifty years. If we removed your insect abdomen now, our civilization would perish. I warned you that if you chose to be our queen, there would be no way back.” Emily trembled, her mind struggling to grasp his words. “So… I… I carry all their sperm inside me?” Kael nodded. “Yes. You will gradually lay twelve thousand eggs, one each day. You will lay for three hundred and fifty years as our queen. Then you will live another three hundred and fifty years as our honored ex-queen, without duties, but still with the fused insect abdomen. Your life will last seven hundred years.” Emily felt her breath catch. “Three hundred and fifty years… every day… one egg… seven hundred years dragging this…” her mind spun in circles. “It is… final…” she whispered. Kael looked at her calmly. “Yes. But you are not alone. Someone would like to meet you.” He left, and Emily remained alone with her thoughts. “I can’t… I can’t endure this…” she cried, when the door opened again.

Into the room crawled a beautiful old lady, also with a massive insect abdomen fused to her body. Her movements were slow but dignified. “My name is Margaret,” she said with a smile. Emily gazed at her in wonder. “You… you are like me…” Margaret nodded. “Yes. I was queen before you. Now I will be your companion and helper for three hundred and fifty years until I die, just as my predecessor was companion to me. And when your fertile period ends, you will be companion to your successor.” Emily felt her heart ease a little. “So… I am not alone…” Margaret smiled. “You are not. And you never will be.” The two quickly became friends, their laughter filling the room as they introduced themselves and shared their stories. Margaret led her outside, showed her the garden she had created over three hundred and fifty years. They crawled together along a walkway made of perfectly smooth yet soft material. “I invented this,” Margaret explained. “So our knees would not hurt, and so the insect abdomen could slide easily.” Emily smiled. “It’s… beautiful.” Margaret continued. “As queen you have not only duties, but privileges. They will do anything for you. They will help you with everything, keep you clean, healthy, give you the most delicious food. They will obey you in all your rulings. You will make laws, and you will make them well. You will make them for twelve thousand of your own future children.” Emily stopped, her eyes filling with tears. “Twelve thousand…” Margaret took her hand. “Yes. But you will have strength. And I will be with you.”

The next day came, and Emily was once again in the hall, on the throne, surrounded by bowing aliens. This time she was not so afraid. Margaret was with her, holding her hand. When she felt the pressure building inside the fused insect abdomen, her breath quickened, but Margaret soothed her. “Breathe… I’m here with you.” Emily pushed; the pain was intense, but this time she was not alone. The egg slipped free from the conjoined insect abdomen, and Margaret helped draw it out and carry it away. Emily watched Margaret take the egg, and felt her fear turn into acceptance. “Maybe… maybe I can do this,” she thought, as her eyes met Margaret’s. They both smiled, and Emily knew that her new life had begun.
